Ashkanani

Mahmoud Ashkanani was born in the Mutabba area of Sharq District, Kuwait, in 1949. He began his artistic journey influenced by the Impressionist and Realist schools, drawing inspiration from masters such as Rembrandt, Johannes Vermeer, and Vincent van Gogh. Their mastery of light, shadow, and composition—particularly in portraiture—played a significant role in shaping his early artistic vision. Over time, Ashkanani’s artistic practice evolved from symbolism to abstraction, eventually developing into a distinctive form of pure abstract expression. Through painting, sculpture, mosaic, and mixed media, he has cultivated a deeply personal visual language rooted in emotion, memory, and cultural identity. Working primarily with acrylic, oil, watercolor, and Indian ink, his works are characterized by bold gestural strokes, layered textures, and luminous color palettes that shift between earthy warmth and cool translucency. His sculptural works, created from stone, wood, and ceramic, extend this expressive sensibility into three-dimensional form. Throughout a career spanning more than four decades, Ashkanani has organized numerous solo exhibitions, including five in Kuwait and additional exhibitions in Dubai and Sfax, Tunisia. Locally, his work has been exhibited at CAP Gallery and Tilal Gallery in Kuwait. Internationally, he has participated in exhibitions, symposiums, workshops, and cultural events across Turkey, Italy, France, Germany, Hungary, Spain, England, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. His participation includes the Cairo Biennale, the Moscow Solo Exhibition 2025, and an auction at Sotheby’s London. Ashkanani received a special invitation from Anadolu University in Turkey, where he conducted workshops for students at the College of Fine Arts. He has also received numerous awards locally and internationally, including the prestigious Saudi Palme d’Or Award at the GCC Visual Art Symposium. In addition, he was honored several times with the Artist of the Year Award at Kuwait’s annual Al Qurain Cultural Festival. He is a member of the Free Atelier under the supervision of Kuwait’s National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, and an honorary member of the Omani Society for Fine Arts, the UAE Fine Arts Society, and the International Dyslexia Association in Washington, D.C. In addition to his artistic practice, Ashkanani has extensive experience in art restoration. He has restored more than 120 artworks belonging to Kuwait’s National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, including sculptures, paintings, and works from private collections. Today, his artworks are included in major public and private collections, including the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, Bayan Palace, Al Seef Palace, and the Museum of Modern Art in Kuwait, as well as the National Museum in Budapest, Hungary, and the National Council of Almuñécar in Spain. Whether working on canvas, paper, or large-scale murals, each piece represents an attempt to translate feeling into form and color into memory. Beyond the studio, Ashkanani remains committed to arts education and community engagement. He has led workshops for people with special needs and continues to contribute to cultural dialogue and diplomacy through his art.
